Chapter 8

Sable and Connie took Humphrey to a nearby café. It wasn’t busy, and they found an empty table in the far corner. Sable took everyone’s order and went over to the counter.

Humphrey took a seat and patted his jacket pocket. “I’m afraid I don’t have any signed photos with me today. I must get some more. If you leave your address with me, I’ll call round with some.”

“Thank you,” Connie said as she sat opposite him. She had no intention of telling Humphrey where she lived. “I can’t believe we ran into you this morning. Do you normally turn up to the filming of the show?”

Humphrey leant back in his chair and folded his arms. “I have done recently because the show is in trouble. As a matter of professional courtesy and as a former presenter, I’ve been watching the shows on TV since that hoodlum took my job. I make notes of what they’re doing wrong, and I send a letter to the producer. I’ve noticed things have become considerably worse recently. That young man, Steven Stevens, is becoming less professional as time goes on. I knew this would happen. I told the producer that. But would he listen? No! He wouldn’t.”

“Here we are,” Sable placed hot drinks in front of them all and took a seat next to Connie.

Connie said to her, “Mr Howden was telling me how he’s been keeping a close eye on Steven recently.”

“Somebody has to!” Humphrey barked. “That show has gone downhill since I left. If it carries on at this rate, there’ll be nothing left to salvage. I’m not sure I’ll even want to return to the show.” He reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, silver flask. “Let’s make this a happy coffee.” He twisted the lid off and poured a significant amount of liquid into his coffee.

Connie glanced at Sable and saw her lips pressing tightly together.

Humphrey looked up from his coffee. “Ladies, would you like a tot of brandy in your drinks too? It’ll perk you right up.”

Sable said coolly, “We don’t need perking up.”

“Suit yourselves.” Humphrey put his flask away. He cupped his hands around his cup and raised it to his mouth. He gave it a loving look before taking a drink. “Ah! That hits the spot. Now, what were we talking about?”

Connie said, “You were telling us why you were at the filming.”

Humphrey took another drink before speaking. “Yes. I have to be there. Someone has to keep an eye on the proceedings. That young fly-by-night will be leaving the show soon. That’s the problem with young people today; they’ve no sticking power. And they’ve no loyalty. Not like us old professionals. I remember when I first started on that show. I didn’t need a catchphrase! All I needed was gumption and common sense. Steven Stevens! I doubt that’s even his real name. He wanted an alliterative name like I have. Imposter! Pah!”

Sable’s eyes narrowed as she looked at Humphrey. Connie could see the irritation on her face and took control of the situation.
